Family Matters - Volunteer Stories
Dianne Sheffield is a single parent who lives with her daughter in Cuney Homes, a public housing project. She has taken on the responsibility of coordinating service projects within Cuney Homes.
Every month she offers volunteer opportunities to the 560 families living there. Whether it is a garage sale to benefit the residents or a health fair, these projects provide a way to develop leadership and civic pride.
Dedicated to building a sense of community within the housing project, Dianne feels like family volunteering is the best way she has found to achieve her mission.
Helping the community is a way of life for the Wilson family. Phyllis, her husband and two children provide a loving home for 10 boys, ages 11 to 15 years old.
Every month you will see the Wilson family volunteering on Family Matters Service projects at a club sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Whether it's a neighborhood clean-up, a health fair, or planting trees - Mom, Dad, and all the family are hard at work.
Mrs. Wilson says, "It is important to teach my children to work together. They come from many different backgrounds, and through community service we are building their sense of what it means to be a family."
Dr. Teddy McDavid, club leader, comments, "I can always count on them. They are remarkable, and through service, the Wilson's are rebuilding lives as well as our community."
