Volunteer Houston's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas"
Since 1988, Volunteer Houston's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" event has provided
backpacks filled with toys and books to over 86,000 disadvantaged children in pre-selected
area schools.
The legend of Saint Nicholas, dating back centuries, describes a virtuous man known
for his philanthropic spirit. Today, Saint Nicholas' Feast Day, December 6, is celebrated
as a children's holiday with hundreds of community and corporate volunteers packing backpacks
and decorating classrooms throughout the city.
For many children, these are the only gifts they will receive for the holiday season.
This celebration not only provides a goodwill opportunity and great benefit to our community's
children, but it also raises funds to support Volunteer Houston's programs, promoting
volunteerism throughout the year.
For a $20 donation, individuals, organizations and businesses can sponsor an underprivileged
child. We will send a lovely card for donations in-memory-of a loved one or as a gift
for a client, friend or family member. To sponsor a child, go to our make a donation page
or for more information on "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", please e-mail Kathleen Bailey at kathleenbailey@usa.net or call at 713-964-0224.
