January
   When: January 27, 2007 (Saturday)
   Event: Arbor Day Tree Planting
Volunteers will plant 20,000 trees from 5-gallon containers that morning along the esplanade of Will Clayton Parkway, between I-59 and Lee Road, at the east end of the grounds of Bush Intercontinental Airport. (The soil will be pre-prepared by the CIty.) About 2000 volunteers will be needed, and they should report for duty at 8 a.m. Volunteers should bring their own shovels and work gloves. (Able-bodied teens are welcome. If accompanied by parents, there is no minimum age requirement for volunteers.) The work should be wrapped up by 12 noon, at which time volunteers will be treated to lunch. This is a joint project of Trees for Houston, the City of Houston, and the Texas Department of Transportation.

Event: 5th Annual Texas Med 5K
This event has 3 components: a walk, a run, and a wheelchair competition. (Each event is 5K and will start and finish at Ben Taub Hospital.) The first of the events will kick off at 8:25 a.m. on January 27, but of course volunteers will need to arrive significantly earlier to help with setup and registration.

Volunteers will be needed to help with setup, registration, timekeeping, water stations, and a post-race party. The minimum age for volunteers is 14, but younger volunteers will be accepted if accompanied by adults. Proceeds will help fund free mammography screenings for low-income women.

   When: February 10, 2007 (Saturday)
   Event: Park to Park Run
The 2007 Park to Park Fun Run consists of a 5-mile run connecting Minute Maid Park and Hermann Park, a 2-mile family walk, and a 1-mile kids' run. In excess of 1000 runners are expected to participate. All proceeds go to benefit the Hermann Park Conservancy.

It takes about 150 volunteers to make the race a success. Volunteer opportunities range from manning registrations table to serving as judges, race monitors, or timers, to helping with set up and clean up, to working prior to the race to prepare packages for runners. Most volunteers will need to arrive around 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the event.

(Note: Additional volunteers will be needed on a selected evening at the Hermann Park Conservancy offices (located inside the park) a few days before the event to stuff complimentary goody bags that will be given to each race participant.)
