The first week of April and continuing:  Interfaith Caring Ministries - will need some "strong" help to move to our new location.  Volunteers needed to help stock new food pantry in League Ctiy.  A good group project.  Contact Janey Nelson at 281-332-3881

Sat, May 30:  Marsh Mania - Galveston Bay Foundation invites you to get wet and wild while helping to clean up Galveston Bay.  Marsh Mania, held from 9am-12pm, allows volunteers to get down and dirty in the name of conservation!  Volunteers can feel good knowing they are helping to create more than 10 acres of habitat in the Galveston Bay area while having a great time.  This annual restoration effort involves clean up and planting of cord grass and sea grass – helping to provide homes for wildlife, protect our shorelines and improve our water quality.  Call 281-332-3381 or visit www.galvbay.org for locations and more information on how you can help.

 

Sat, May 30:  Houston / Galveston National Weather Service 2009 Hurricane Workshop, George R. Brown Convention Center, 10 am to 2pm - Choose from several exciting roles and time slots to participate in this year’s Hurricane Workshop. Families and kids of all ages will participate in the interactive booths, talk to their local Emergency Management Coordinator, and simulate a large scale evacuation.  Volunteers will even have an opportunity to learn how to operate the same tools Emergency Responders use to process and track evacuees and patients!  Contact Frankie Trifilio at frank.trifilio@cityofhouston.net or 281-630-7211.


JUNE


Mid June through mid August – Cross in the City office has a volunteer opportunity for adults, teens, groups and families.  Distribute an already prepared lunch to kids at their office.  Volunteers will also chat and play some games with the kids while the kids eat their lunch. Times available are Monday through Thursday from 11-1.  Would like if a family, church, or group will adopt one day out of the week.  Training provided.  Contact James Leslie for more details at 713 477 9600 or 713 306 3805

 

Fri, Sat, June 12-13: Food Drive - Bay Area Turning Point is seeking volunteers to assist with the Star Toyota Fill The Truck Food Drive on Friday and Saturday, June 12-13.  Volunteers will help accept food donations at Kroger stores in Clear Lake, Friendswood and League City.  Three and four hour shifts are available between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Fri. and 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sat.  Teens and adults may register to volunteer.  Donated food will support victims of domestic violence and the homeless.  Call Terri Musse @ 281-338-7600

July 4:  Celebrate Independence Day at Chevy's Freedom Over Texas which will be held on Saturday, July 4, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Eleanor Tinsley Park @ Buffalo Bayou.  Afternoon or evening assignments can include assisting with admissions or tending any of the many booths that make up the festival's infrastructure. In return for their time, volunteers will be treated to world-class entertainment, free parking, free admission, event shirts, excellent prize drawings, great refreshments, and dazzling fireworks displays. Sat. July 18:  Honeywell Lunar Rendezvous Run - Space Center Houston will host the annual Lunar Rendezvous Run on Saturday, July 18.  Volunteers are needed for the running race starting at 6 a.m.  Volunteers will help with race set up and take down activities, hand out refreshments parking duties and help with crowd control.  The running race is a part of the Lunar Rendezvous Foundation and Festival, a non-profit organization that preserves the historical lore and space science accomplishments of the Bay Area.  Funds raised through festival activities support area schools, libraries, museums, cultural arts organizations and charitable projects including “A Visit From Saint Nicholas” and Operation School Bell.  Contact Jay at 281-226-4688

Sun. July 5:  ALL THINGS CARIBBEAN -  will be the focus of the annual Houston CaribFest  taking place July 5 at Tom Bass Park (at Beltway 8 and Highway 288, the north edge of Pearland). Hours. 10 – 10.  You can be at the center of this celebration of island culture and cuisine by helping out at a ticket booth or concession area. Shifts will be available from morning through evening.
